Witness Appeal Following Racial Abuse Incident in Southampton City Centre

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 28 year old man was subjected to racial abuse and threats in a central Southampton street earlier this month.

The incident took place between 1:00pm and 1:15pm on Wednesday, 9 July, at the busy junction of East Street and High Street/Above Bar. According to police, the victim was approached by an unknown man who directed racist remarks and threats at him in what is being described as an unprovoked attack.

The location, a well-frequented pedestrian area in the heart of the city, is thought to have been busy at the time, and police believe there may be several witnesses who either saw or heard the incident.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is urging anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have captured the event on mobile phone, CCTV or dash cam footage, to come forward and assist with their enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 44250304661. Reports can also be made online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website under the “Tell us about an existing case or report” section.

Alternatively, information can be passed on anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting their website.
