Amoy Street North and South car park proposals set to be revised after public feedback

Southampton City Council has announced that it will revise its proposals for Amoy Street North and South car parks following feedback from residents and businesses during a recent Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) consultation.

The consultation, carried out earlier this year as part of the council’s wider Car Park Review Programme under the Asset Development and Disposal Programme, originally included proposals to close both car parks. However, the council has now confirmed that it will not progress with those plans.

Instead, they will consult on alternative proposals in the new year that retain some of the existing parking provision at Amoy Street.

The council said the decision was made after reviewing consultation responses and carrying out further engagement with businesses in the local area.

Alongside the changes to the Amoy Street proposals, the council is also working on improvements to parking provision across the Bedford Place area. These include a review of current on-street long- and short-stay parking to ensure it meets the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.

Concerns raised about the Bedford Place Multi-Storey Car Park have also been addressed, with a remedial action plan now in place to improve safety, security, cleanliness and accessibility. Other nearby car parks in Bedford Place, including Wilton Avenue, will continue to be monitored to ensure they support customers and visitors to local businesses.

Councillor Sarah Bogle, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said:

“We are grateful to all residents and businesses who have taken time out to provide us with their views on our current proposals. We have listened to their feedback and will provide a further update on the next phase of consultation in the new year.

“It’s important that whilst we look at options and proposals for Amoy Street Car Parks that we review the parking on offer across Bedford Place to ensure it is safe, accessible, and convenient for those who work and visit the area.”

The council has said it will continue to provide updates through its dedicated Amoy Street Car Park web pages and frequently asked questions, with more information expected once the next phase of consultation begins.
