Two Arrested After Car Driven at Police in Freemantle

Two people have been arrested after a vehicle was driven at police officers in Freemantle during the early hours of this morning.

Officers were in the area conducting enquiries linked to a missing person report when they located a man who was wanted on recall to prison. Shortly before 12.30am on 25 January, officers in two police vehicles attended Paynes Road.

Police say a vehicle travelling without its lights on attempted to flee the scene and collided with both police cars, causing damage to the front of one vehicle and the rear of the other. During the incident, the car was also driven at officers. No injuries were reported.

Additional officers quickly attended the scene, where a 45-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder. A 36-year-old woman from Ashford, Surrey, was also arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

Both remain in custody while enquiries continue.

Police said officers regularly attend a wide range of incidents across the city, many of which involve a risk of injury, abuse or assault while carrying out their duties.

A spokesperson said such behaviour towards officers is “never acceptable” and added that police will continue to put themselves in harm’s way to protect communities, tackle offenders and prevent crime.
