Teenage Boys Sentenced for Assaulting Staff Member at Dibden Purlieu Convenience Store

Two teenage boys have been sentenced in connection with an assault on a staff member at a convenience store in Dibden Purlieu earlier this summer.

The incident took place on Tuesday, 17 June at the Tesco Express on Beaulieu Road. The two boys, aged 14 and 15, were challenged by a staff member during their visit to the store, at which point they assaulted him.

The case was heard at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 1 September, where both teenagers pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

The 14 year old, from Hythe, was also found to be in breach of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) by entering the store. As a result, the court extended both his existing CBO and Youth Rehabilitation Order.

The 15 year old, from Dibden, was sentenced to a three-month Youth Referral Order.

In addition, both boys were ordered to pay £50 in compensation to the victim. Neither teenager can be named due to legal restrictions protecting the identity of minors.

Sergeant Glenn Wilshere of the Waterside Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) commented on the sentencing, stating:

“We hope this outcome evidences our team’s commitment to protecting our communities and bringing to account those responsible for criminality and antisocial behaviour.
We will not tolerate behaviour which targets businesses and other innocent members of our community, and we will continue to deal with those intent on causing harm here.”

He added that the police will continue to keep the public informed of their ongoing work in the area.

Local businesses or residents who wish to report incidents of antisocial behaviour or criminal activity are encouraged to contact police via 101 or report online through the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website.
