Suspected Shoplifter Arrested After Foot Chase Through Eastleigh Town Centre

A man was arrested in Eastleigh town centre yesterday afternoon following a swift police response and a foot chase through the area.

Officers from the Eastleigh Central Neighbourhood Policing Team were on high-visibility patrols when they received a report over the town’s Shop Watch radio scheme that a male had stolen several items from a retailer on Market Street.

Thanks to a clear and prompt description from store staff, officers PCSO Tom and PC Aaron were able to spot the suspect near Eastleigh train station just moments later. Upon sighting police, the suspect fled the scene, sparking a foot pursuit.

With help from members of the public who pointed officers in the right direction, PCSO Tom gave chase towards Lidl while PC Aaron coordinated from another direction. The suspect attempted to evade capture by jumping multiple fences, but officers successfully caught up with him a short distance away.

The man was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting. Following a search, he was further arrested for possession of a controlled drug. The stolen items were recovered and returned to the retailer. The investigation is ongoing at this stage.

Police praised the collaborative effort between local businesses, the Eastleigh BID Shop Watch Scheme, and the Eastleigh Borough Council CCTV team, describing the incident as a strong example of partnership working to keep the town centre safe.
