Southampton Residents Invited to Learn About UK’s Digital Phone Upgrade at Bitterne Library Drop-In

Residents in Southampton are being encouraged to find out more about the upcoming changes to the UK’s telephone network at a special Digital Voice Drop-In Session taking place later this month.

The event, hosted by Southampton City Council in partnership with BT, will be held at Bitterne Library on Wednesday 22 October, between 10am and 2pm.

The UK is in the process of upgrading its traditional copper-based telephone system to a new digital service, known as Digital Voice, which uses the internet to make calls. The change is part of a nationwide move to modernise communication infrastructure, with the full switchover due to be completed by 31 January 2027.

At the drop-in session, members of the public will have the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from BT, who will explain how the transition will work, what it means for customers, and what support is available — particularly for vulnerable users or those who rely on landline connections for essential services.

Southampton City Council understands that changes like this can raise questions, especially for residents who depend on their landlines or have limited access to digital services. This session is a great opportunity to get clear information and reassurance directly from BT’s team.

No booking is required, and residents are welcome to drop in at any time between 10am and 2pm.
