Southampton City Council Calls for Public Support to Secure Funding for Northam Rail Bridge Replacement
Southampton City Council, working in partnership with Network Rail, has issued a call for residents, businesses, commuters and community groups to back its bid for crucial government funding to replace the ageing Northam Rail Bridge.
The 117-year-old structure, which carries one of the region’s busiest road and rail corridors, is nearing the end of its operational life. The council says replacing it is essential not only to address mounting maintenance issues but also to unlock major opportunities for cleaner travel, improved connectivity and economic regeneration.
The proposed scheme, being prepared through an Outline Business Case jointly developed with Network Rail, would see the current bridge replaced with modern structures designed to support safer walking and cycling, more reliable public transport, and reduced congestion. According to the council, these upgrades are aligned with the wider Southampton Renaissance Vision for long-term economic growth.
A bridge vital to the city’s future
Southampton City Council stresses that the benefits of replacement are wide-ranging. These include securing a long-term future for a key city gateway, resolving maintenance concerns, easing a long-standing traffic bottleneck, improving air quality and strengthening access to key destinations such as St Mary’s Stadium, Old Northam Road and the Itchen Riverside.
As part of the bid preparation, the council is inviting residents and businesses to attend upcoming engagement events to view early proposals, ask questions and offer feedback. This input will be used to refine the plans and bolster the case for government investment.
Councillor Christie Lambert, Cabinet Member for Transport and Deputy Leader, said:
“Replacing the Northam Rail Bridge is a vital step towards ensuring the safety and connectivity of our city. This project will not only address long-standing maintenance issues but also create new opportunities for growth and development. We are committed to working closely with the community to make this vision a reality and urge everyone to get involved, share their views, and help us secure government support.”
Network Rail, which is contributing to and supporting the funding bid, emphasised the strategic significance of the route.
Paul McAleer, Principal Programme Sponsor for Network Rail’s Wessex Route, said:
“We’re proud to be working as Southampton City Council’s delivery partner on this transformative project. Northam Rail Bridge sits at the heart of one of the UK’s most critical rail corridors, connecting Southampton to London, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, and beyond. Together, the council’s transformational vision and Network Rail’s engineering expertise, we can deliver a modern, resilient bridge that supports sustainable transport, economic growth, and long-term benefits for both road and rail users.”
The council urges anyone who travels through or lives near Northam to take part in the engagement process to ensure the future bridge meets the needs of the whole community.
