Shoplifting Suspects Caught and Charged After Southampton Police Response

Southampton police officers arrested two men on Saturday morning following an alleged shoplifting incident in Bedford Place.

PCs Fall and Boddington were dispatched shortly after beginning their shift on 29 November, responding to reports that suspected shoplifters were actively stealing from a local store. Upon arrival, the officers carried out enquiries and traced two individuals believed to be involved to Derby Road, where one man was found carrying a quantity of stolen meat.

Following a brief struggle, both suspects were arrested and taken to Southampton Central police station. Before leaving the scene, the officers returned the recovered goods to the store and ensured a receipt was issued.

At the station, PCs Fall and Boddington carried out interviews and prepared evidence for charges to be authorised.

Christopher Arthur Wright, 27, of no fixed abode, was charged with shoplifting and obstructing or resisting a constable.
Vinnie Brunsdon, 20, of Victoria Road, Southampton, was charged with handling stolen goods.

Wright appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today (1 December), where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three weeks in prison.

A police spokesperson said the case highlights the ongoing work being done to tackle shoplifting across the city. “We take these offences extremely seriously and will do our utmost to protect and support shop staff and security, and to get justice when offences are committed,” they added.
