Further Updates - Five Hospitalised After College Bus Plunges Into River in Eastleigh
Date: 26 June, 2025
Five people have been taken to hospital—two with serious but not life-threatening injuries—after a double-decker college bus crashed off the road and landed in a river in Eastleigh this morning, Thursday, 26 June.
The incident took place at around 10:00am on Bishopstoke Road. The bus, operated by Bluestar and carrying students from Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, left the carriageway and came to rest in a shallow river.
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that 20 people were on board the College 607 service at the time of the crash, including 19 passengers and the driver. Emergency services arrived to find several individuals trapped inside the bus.
Inspector Andy Tester of Hampshire Constabulary described the scene as “terrifying” and said specialist teams were deployed to rescue those still onboard.
“There were a large number of specialist resources helping to get people out of the bus,” he said. “Some people had managed to get themselves out, but we needed to carefully triage and account for everyone inside.”
The South Central Ambulance Service dispatched five ambulances, two air ambulances, and multiple specialist units to the scene. All passengers were safely removed from the bus, with five transported to hospital for treatment.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews from Eastleigh, St Mary’s, Redbridge, Hightown, and Portchester responded to the crash. “We are working alongside our emergency service colleagues to manage the scene and assist those affected,” they said.
In response to the crash, Barton Peveril College set up an incident centre at The Hub in Bishopstoke for concerned parents and guardians.
A statement from the college urged the public not to visit the crash site: “We are aware of the incident involving the College 607 Bus. Staff are working closely with the police to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students.”
Bishopstoke Road remains closed and is expected to stay shut for up to 12 hours as investigation and recovery operations continue.
