Southampton City Council Admits Error After Taking Early Direct Debit Payments from 2,900 Accounts
Date: 26 June, 2025
Southampton City Council has apologised after mistakenly collecting Direct Debit payments early from residents and local businesses.
In a statement issued today, the council confirmed that around 2,900 Direct Debit payments were taken this morning, a full five days ahead of schedule. The error affects individuals and organisations who pay invoices for council services via Direct Debit.
While the payments relate to legitimate services that have either already been provided or are due to be delivered, the council admitted they were taken earlier than agreed due to a “processing error.”
Council officials are now working to manually return the funds to all affected accounts. Refunds are expected to be completed by the end of the day on Thursday 26 June, the council said.
The Direct Debits will then be taken again on the correct date, which is Tuesday 1 July.
In the meantime, the council has urged anyone facing immediate financial hardship because of the premature payment to get in touch.
“We’re very sorry for this mistake and the inconvenience caused. If you are facing immediate difficulty due to this error, please contact us on 023 8083 3000 and we will endeavour to prioritise your repayment,” the council said in its statement.
