Murder Investigation Launched After Body Found on Southampton Common
A murder investigation has been launched after the discovery of a body on Southampton Common earlier this week.
Police were called at around 4.40pm on Wednesday, 8 October, after a member of the public found a body, believed to be an adult, in a wooded area near the wildlife reserve, north of Ornamental Lake and just off Green Path.
Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Major Crime Team are leading the investigation, which has been named Operation Entrust. The death is currently being treated as suspicious.
Detectives believe the deceased may have been homeless and living on the Common. Investigators have also found signs that a significant fire had taken place at the same spot, possibly several months ago.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, who is leading the investigation, said police are working to establish the victim’s identity and determine what happened.
“We have allocated significant resources and specialist officers into the early stages of our investigation to enable us to identify the deceased and progress our enquiries,” DCI Gillooly said.
“The area where the body was located is remote, overgrown and away from footpaths, but I have no doubt that members of the local community may hold key information that can assist us. At this time investigators are working hard to establish a time-frame for the offence, this could potentially be a number of months ago.
“We’re especially keen to hear from anyone who may remember seeing smoke or a fire in this area. We also want to build a list of people who may have relevant footage that could help our enquiries.”
Police are appealing for GoPro or cycling footage taken on the Common, as well as CCTV or video doorbell recordings that might show people entering or leaving the area in recent months.
Uniformed officers remain at the scene, and the Neighbourhood Policing Team is carrying out regular patrols to reassure the community. Officers will also be present at local events, including the Southampton parkrun, to speak with residents.
“We understand that this is a concerning incident for our community,” DCI Gillooly added. “Our officers are available to provide reassurance and to speak to anyone who may have information.”
No arrests have been made at this stage, and enquiries are continuing.
