Man Jailed and Banned from Stores After £1,700 Shoplifting Spree in Hampshire

Date: 27 June, 2025

A 27 year old man from Southampton has been jailed and handed a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) after admitting to a series of shoplifting offences across the Hampshire area.

Dylan James David, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 13 May after pleading guilty to 17 separate thefts. The offences, committed between 21 March and 27 April, totalled more than £1,700 in stolen goods from stores in Hedge End, Bursledon, Park Gate and Southampton.

Among the items stolen were:
• £253.20 from Morrisons Daily, Montague Avenue, Southampton
• £413.45 from One Stop, North East Road, Southampton
• £266.65 from One Stop, Exford Avenue, Southampton
• £706.91 from One Stop, Portsmouth Road, Bursledon
• £76.52 from Marks & Spencer, Tollbar Way, Hedge End
• £52.52 from Sainsbury’s, Bridge Road, Park Gate

David was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

He appeared again at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 18 June, where he was issued with a five-year CBO designed to prevent further offending.

As part of the order, David is banned from entering:
• Any Morrisons or Morrisons Daily
• Any One Stop store
• Any BP petrol station
• Any Co-op store

The CBO also requires him to:
• Leave any store or business premises immediately when asked by staff
• Avoid any retail or business premises from which he is banned
• Place items intended for purchase in a store-provided basket or trolley until paid for, and then leave the basket or trolley behind, where applicable

Failure to comply with the CBO could result in arrest and further prosecution.

Local officer PC Simon Peacock from Hedge End’s Neighbourhood Policing Team welcomed the court’s decision.

“I am pleased to see David sentenced and now subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order, which will offer stores further protection from any more thefts and losses at his hands,” he said.

“David has continually targeted shops across our district and beyond, showing no willingness to comply with the law in the process.

“We regularly target and prosecute shoplifters. However, securing this CBO provides additional restrictions which help us prevent and disrupt any potential further offending perpetrated by him.

“Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. Repeat offences, in particular, can create an environment of fear for many retail workers, and this is simply not okay.

“We want to stop this criminality, and encourage businesses affected to please keep reporting crimes to us, so we can relentlessly pursue those responsible.

“Local policing teams put in a lot of work to support businesses, disrupt habitual offenders like David, and also work with support services for those whose offending cycle is driven by other factors such as drug and alcohol dependency.”

Police are encouraging shop owners and staff to report shoplifting incidents by calling 101 or reporting online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website. Anonymous reports can also be made through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visiting their website.

In a separate case, a 54 year old man from Bursledon was also sentenced for shoplifting.

Richard Charles Brown, of Silver Birches, admitted stealing from the One Stop on Portsmouth Road, Bursledon on 17 April. He was ordered to pay £20 in compensation and £85 in court costs after pleading guilty on Tuesday 24 June.
