Disqualified Southampton driver jailed after police chase

A disqualified driver from Southampton has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after leading police on a high-speed chase through the Isle of Wight, reaching speeds of up to 90mph and crashing into multiple vehicles.

Callum Bryan Hickman, 26, of Princes Court, Southampton, was behind the wheel of a red Citroen C3 on 4 August 2024, despite being disqualified from driving and having no insurance.

At around 11.20am, Hickman was spotted by officers in an unmarked police car driving along Fairlee Road towards Newport High Street. When signalled to stop, he fled at dangerous speeds, sparking a pursuit along Whippingham Road, Beatrice Avenue, and back to Fairlee Road, where he drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with several vehicles.

Due to the increasing danger to the public, officers were forced to abandon the pursuit. However, Hickman continued driving recklessly, heading the wrong way along the dual carriageway on Medina Way. He then entered the on-slip to River Way, where he lost control and crashed off a roundabout near Topps Tiles before fleeing the scene on foot.

Following an investigation and subsequent arrest, Hickman appeared before Newport Crown Court today, where he was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment for dangerous driving.
