Man Dies After Altercation in Portswood; Four Arrested on Suspicion of Murder
A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following a late-night altercation in Portswood on Wednesday (3 December).
Police were called to Belmont Road just before 11.30pm after reports that two men had been assaulted by an unknown man. When officers arrived, they found the group involved in the incident and discovered that the unidentified man had suffered a serious chest injury. Despite efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The man has not yet been formally identified.
As part of their initial investigation, officers arrested four people — a 22 year old man, a 26 year old man, a 51 year old man, and a 52 year old woman, all from Southampton. They have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.
DCI Rebekah Bartholomew, who is leading the investigation, acknowledged the concern caused within the community. She said:
“I understand this news and the road closures we have in place will be concerning for local residents, and I want to thank you all for your understanding and patience while we carry out our enquiries.”
She added that the enquiry is still in its early stages:
“We are in the early stages of our investigation, and my team are working hard to piece together the exact circumstances and understand the moments that led up to the call to us.”
DCI Bartholomew reassured residents that police currently believe the incident to be isolated:
“At this time, I believe this to be an isolated incident, but if you do have any concerns then please do not hesitate to speak with officers who will be in and around Belmont Road throughout the coming days.”
Officers remain at the scene today, conducting house-to-house enquiries and additional patrols.
Police are appealing for anyone with information, including CCTV or other video footage from the Belmont Road area between 11pm and 11.30pm, to come forward.
