Major Diesel Spill Forces Road Closures in Southampton

UPDATE 7pm: The clean up has been completed and Angelsea Road, Winchester Road and St James Road have reopened.

_______

A significant diesel spill has led to the closure of several key roads in Southampton this evening, prompting travel disruption and safety warnings from Southampton City Council.

The spill, which originated from a vehicle, has affected a wide area including Anglesea Road, Winchester Road, and St James Road. Emergency response teams are currently on site, working to contain and clean up the hazardous material.

Officials have confirmed that road closures will be implemented over the next few hours as cleanup operations continue. Commuters are being urged to avoid the affected areas and use alternative routes.

“Diesel acts as a lubricant and significantly reduces the friction between tyres and the road surface,” said a spokesperson for Southampton City Council. “This dramatically increases the risk of accidents.”

In addition to the immediate danger to drivers, diesel poses a threat to road infrastructure. Prolonged exposure can dissolve asphalt and bitumen, weakening the road surface and potentially leading to potholes and structural damage.

Public Safety Priority

Local authorities are stressing that public safety remains their top priority.

“Our teams are working as quickly and safely as possible, but the scale of the spill means the cleanup will take time,” the spokesperson added. “We apologise for the inconvenience caused and will keep residents updated once we have further information.”

Residents and drivers are advised to monitor local traffic updates, plan alternative routes, and allow extra time for their journeys.
