Man speeding in 30 zone given suspended sentence over fatal Southampton crash

A driver who was travelling at nearly twice the speed limit when he fatally struck a pedestrian on a Southampton crossing has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Martin Hayward was driving at up to 56mph in a 30mph zone when he collided with Clare Munn on a pedestrian crossing on Bitterne Road West shortly after 10pm on 2 May 2022. Police were called to the scene, but Ms Munn died as a result of her injuries.

The 55-year-old, of Anson Drive in Southampton, was convicted of causing death by careless driving on 19 January following a trial at Southampton Crown Court.

On 19 February, he was sentenced to 34 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months, fined £4,500 and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

PC Rebecca Starks said: “Speed kills, and Clare would not have died if the defendant was driving at the speed limit.

“The defendant’s driving fell below the standards anyone would expect of a competent and careful driver.”

In a statement issued after the sentencing, Clare’s family said: “The court has now reached its verdict, and the driver involved has been found guilty.

“We respect the judicial process and the sentencing decision of the court, this outcome does not lessen the grief we feel, nor does it bring back the person we loved so deeply.

“We want to express our sincere thanks to the emergency services, and members of the public who assisted at the scene, as well as to everyone who has supported our family throughout this incredibly difficult time. Your compassion has been a source of strength.

“As a family, we ask for privacy as we continue to grieve and attempt to rebuild our lives without our daughter. We would be grateful if the media could respect our need for personal space while we come to terms with our loss.”
