Two Arrested in Winchester Over Fish Poaching and Firearm Offences

Two men have been arrested following reports of illegal fishing on the River Itchen in Winchester yesterday evening.

Hampshire Constabulary responded to calls at around 5:15pm on 21 August, reporting suspected poaching activity between Easton Lane and Church Lane. Upon arrival, officers engaged with a group of individuals and seized several items, including fishing rods, a net, air rifles, and ball bearings.

An 18 year old man and a 21 year old man were arrested at the scene on suspicion of poaching offences, theft, and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place. Both remain in police custody at this time.

Fish poaching – legally referred to as theft of fishing rights – is a recurring issue during the summer months and is often linked to wider anti-social behaviour. Authorities have also raised concerns about incidents involving intimidation and violence towards riverkeepers and landowners.

Hampshire Constabulary is urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour along the county’s waterways.

A spokesperson for the force said: “These types of offences not only harm wildlife and ecosystems but can also be associated with serious criminal activity. We’re committed to working with local communities to protect our natural environments.”

The public can hear more about the impact of river crime by watching a video interview with a local riverkeeper on the Hampshire Constabulary website.

Anyone with information or concerns is encouraged to contact police via 101 or report incidents anonymously through Crimestoppers.
