Sprinklers Contain Kitchen Blaze in Southampton High-Rise

A high-rise sprinkler system in Southampton has been credited with preventing a potentially serious fire from spreading, after flames broke out in a third-floor flat on Irving Road.

The incident occurred at around 5:00pm on Tuesday, 12 August, when Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge, St Mary’s, Hightown, and Southsea were called to reports of smoke and flames.

Investigators said the blaze was caused by textiles accidentally left on a cooking hob. Upon arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat to fully extinguish the fire, which had already been contained by the building’s sprinkler system.

Two cats were rescued from the property and reunited with their relieved owner. No injuries were reported.

Incident Commander Mark Caplen praised the building’s fire safety measures, saying:

“The sprinklers operated exactly as intended, containing the fire to a single room and preventing it from becoming a far more serious incident. Once the system was isolated, we were able to enter the flat and fully extinguish the fire.”

The building’s “stay put” policy was followed by other residents, under guidance from the fire service’s control room. The occupier of the affected flat had already evacuated before crews arrived.

Firefighters received the stop message at 6:30pm, marking the end of the operation.

Officials say the incident highlights the life-saving role of modern fire safety systems in high-rise buildings, crediting them for protecting both residents and property.
