Southampton Unveils Month-Long Programme for Black History Month 2025
Southampton is marking the beginning of Black History Month with a diverse and inclusive programme of events designed to honour the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black communities both locally and globally.
Organised by Southampton City Council, this year’s Black History Month will run throughout October and features the theme of “Recognition, Reflection, and Celebration”, aiming to spark meaningful conversations and engagement around Black history, identity, and culture.
Spotlight on Colourism
A key feature of this year’s programme is the return of Black History Month South’s Colourism Exhibition, which made a strong impression in 2024 by tackling the complexities of colourism within the Black community and society at large.
For 2025, the exhibition will focus on how colourism affects young people, exploring issues of identity, representation, and beauty standards. The exhibition will be installed at several locations across the city, including Southampton Central Library, Shirley Library, Woolston Library, Mayflower Studios, Solent University, October Books, Barton Peveril College, and God’s House Tower.
Community Engagement Through Libraries
Throughout the month, all Southampton City Council libraries will offer curated reading lists highlighting Black authors, historical narratives, and contemporary voices. These lists are designed to educate, inspire, and promote understanding across all age groups and can be accessed both online and in-person.
Music, Arts and Black-Owned Business Showcase
Returning to Guildhall Square on Sunday 12 October, the Black Business Arts and Music Festival (BBAM) promises a vibrant, family-friendly celebration of Black culture. The festival will feature live music and dance performances, local food and drink, art displays, and showcases of Black-owned businesses.
The event offers an opportunity for the community to come together in support of local talent while experiencing the rich cultural heritage of Southampton’s Black communities.
Council Leader’s Statement
Speaking ahead of the launch, Councillor Alex Winning, Leader of Southampton City Council, emphasised the importance of Black History Month as part of the city’s cultural identity:
“Black History Month is an essential part of our city’s cultural calendar. It gives us a dedicated time to honour the history, struggles, and successes of Black individuals and communities who have shaped Southampton and the wider world. We are committed to recognising this heritage not just in October, but throughout the year. This year’s programme reflects our city’s diversity and aims to bring people together through education, expression, and shared experience.”
