Police Crack Down on Illegal Car Meets Across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight
Footage shared by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Roads Policing team has revealed the shocking moment a dangerous driver drifted around a roundabout during an illegal car meet in Portsmouth — while crowds watched on just metres away.
The incident took place on Portfield Road, Portsmouth, on 28 December 2024, and was captured on multiple videos showing a pink BMW performing dangerous manoeuvres. Following an investigation, 23 year old Daniel Broomfield, of Ticonderoga Gardens, Southampton, was identified as the driver.
Broomfield pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced on 25 September 2025 to 27 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to complete unpaid work and a rehabilitation programme.
The case is one of more than 200 offences involving illegal car meets that police have dealt with across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in just over a year.
Since August 2024, officers have taken robust action against those taking part in dangerous and anti-social driving events, leading to 215 offences being dealt with. In total, more than £13,000 in fines have been issued, along with 69 penalty points, four driving disqualifications, and 76 Fixed Penalty Notices. In the most serious cases, 54 prosecutions have been brought to court.
Among the latest offenders is Mohammed Junaid Syed, 31, of Oak Tree Road, Knaphill, Woking, Surrey. He was witnessed drifting his BMW on a petrol station forecourt on Great Binfields Road, Basingstoke, on 4 January 2025.
Syed pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced on 1 September, receiving a £1,000 fine, a 12-month driving ban, and 120 hours of unpaid work.
Another offender, Christopher Tombs, 19, of Gravelly Close, Tadley, was found guilty after a trial for dangerous driving at an illegal car meet on Harbour Parade, Southampton, on 21 September 2024. He was seen driving with a passenger hanging out of the front passenger window.
Tombs was sentenced on 24 September 2025 to a £1,250 fine and an 18-month driving disqualification.
Police Sergeant James Hall, who leads the Roads Policing investigations into illegal car meets, said officers are determined to put a stop to the growing problem:
“Residents, motorists and our Roads Policing teams have had enough with these groups of drivers selfishly taking over public roads and car parks and we will not tolerate it in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
“They are not only a complete nuisance, but they are also putting themselves and innocent bystanders at risk of serious injury.
“We will continue to prosecute these drivers and I hope these recent cases serve as a warning – you won’t get away with it.
“As you can see, these investigations can take some time to collect all of the evidence we need but whether it takes a month or a year we will find out who you are and we will take robust action against you.”
Police say they will continue targeting illegal meets, stressing that their enforcement operations are ongoing and that anyone caught driving dangerously or anti-socially will face prosecution.
