Multiple Calls from Concerned Motorists Lead to Arrest of Drink-Driver on M3
A van driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after more than ten members of the public reported his dangerous behaviour on the M3 near Eastleigh earlier this afternoon.
Hampshire’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) said officers were alerted when numerous motorists phoned in to raise concerns about the poor driving of a Peugeot Boxer van travelling southbound. Due to the urgency of the reports, officers were immediately deployed to intercept the vehicle.
RPU officers from Totton stopped the van on Stoneham Way. The driver was detained and failed a roadside breath test, recording 93 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath—almost three times the legal limit of 35. A further evidential test in custody returned a reading of 101 microgrammes.
In a statement, an RPU spokesperson said:
“This stop really does highlight the importance of members of the public reporting poor driving to us, allowing us to deploy resources to intercept drink and drug drivers.”
They added:
“Thank you to those who called regarding this driver. Your information was extremely helpful, enabling us to deploy resources promptly.”
No injuries were reported, and the RPU emphasised that public vigilance and reporting dangerous driving can make a significant difference in keeping roads safe.
