Man jailed for 30 months after stabbing victim in Winchester

A man has been jailed after admitting stabbing another man in the arm during an incident in Winchester.

Daniel McAuley, 35, of Winnall Manor Road, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Monday 15 December. He had been due to stand trial but was sentenced after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) without intent.

The court heard that police were called at around 10.20pm on Friday 20 June following reports that a man in his 40s had been injured in the Durngate Terrace area of the city. An altercation had taken place inside a vehicle, during which the victim was stabbed in the arm. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers attended the scene and arrested McAuley nearby. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was found discarded close to where he was detained.

Following an investigation by officers from Winchester CID, McAuley was charged in connection with the incident. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

Detective Constable Frank Jones, the officer in the case, said: “The consequences of carrying and using knives can be devastating.

“Fortunately in this case, the victim did not sustain a life-threatening injury, but using a knife in this way can easily lead to fatal consequences.

“I hope this investigation and court result shows we will take knife crime seriously and will look to take those who perpetrate off the streets and before the courts.”
