Drug-driving tradesman sentenced after 60mph police chase through Southampton
A drug-driving tradesman who led police on a 60mph chase through residential streets in Southampton before crashing into an unmarked police car and attempting to flee the scene has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
Southampton Crown Court heard that 25-year-old Jordan Carson was spotted by officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s proactive roads policing team while they were on patrol on February 12 this year. Officers attempted to stop Carson’s white Transit van, which initially pulled over on Upper Deacon Road.
However, Carson then drove off, sparking a pursuit through residential areas of Sholing and Bitterne. One police unit followed the van while other officers were directed into position in anticipation of Carson attempting to escape on foot.
The chase came to an end in Merryoak Green, where Carson attempted to reverse his van into a police car before abandoning the vehicle and running directly into the path of an officer on foot. He was arrested at the scene.
The court heard Carson was driving without a licence or insurance and later tested positive for cannabis.
Carson, of Spring Road, Southampton, admitted dangerous driving, drug driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to stop for police.
He was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years. The court also imposed a two-year driving ban, ordered him to take an extended driving test before he can regain his licence, and sentenced him to 150 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
Speaking after the sentencing, investigating officer PC Jake Lawrence said:
“Carson’s arrogance led him to believe he was a more capable driver than our specially trained team, and could escape justice by leading them on a chase through a residential area.
“Thanks to PC Scott’s expertly led pursuit, he wasn’t able to get away and is now paying the price for his decision to get behind the wheel while on drugs, and without a licence or insurance.
“There is simply no excuse for dangerous driving on our roads, which puts the lives of other motorists in danger.”
Footage of the vehicle pursuit is available to view on the Hampshire Constabulary website.
