Man Charged Following Reports of Sexual Assaults in Southampton
A man has been charged in connection with three reported sexual assaults on women in the Portswood and Bevois areas of Southampton.
The charges follow an incident in Upper Shaftesbury Avenue in the early hours of Tuesday, 25 November. Police said a woman was walking along the road shortly after midnight when she was approached by a man she did not know, who allegedly attempted to kiss her. She was able to push him away and flee the scene.
Following enquiries, officers have charged 30 year old Sohail Amiri, of Highfield Lane, Southampton, with sexual assault. He faces two additional counts of sexual assault relating to incidents on 23 September on Westwood Road, where he is alleged to have made inappropriate comments and approaches to two women.
Amiri, who has said he is from Afghanistan, has also been charged with entering the UK without leave under Section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971.
He is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today (29 November).
