Firefighters issue warning after mobile phone charging causes bedroom blaze

Fire crews have issued a safety warning following a house fire in Southampton caused by a mobile phone left charging on a bed.

Crews from St Mary’s and Redbridge, part of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, were called to Denzil Avenue shortly before 8.45am on Thursday morning (26 February).

On arrival, firefighters discovered a fire in a first-floor bedroom involving a mobile phone that had been charging. Crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames before ventilating the property to clear smoke.

No injuries were reported.

The service is now reminding residents of the potential fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly when devices are overcharged, damaged or used with incorrect chargers.

A spokesperson said batteries can overheat and ignite if faulty or not used correctly, and urged the public to follow safety guidance when charging electronic devices.

Residents are advised to use only the charger supplied with the device or a manufacturer-approved replacement, avoid leaving items on charge once fully powered, and never charge devices on beds, sofas or other soft furnishings.

Firefighters also recommend charging devices in areas that would not block an escape route in the event of a fire, avoiding covering batteries while charging, and regularly checking for signs of damage such as swelling, dents or overheating.

Householders are further reminded to ensure working smoke alarms are fitted on every level of their home.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly everyday household items can pose a serious fire risk if not used safely.
