Fire Crews Respond to Alarm and Smoke Reports at Shirley Towers in Southampton

Fire crews were called to a high-rise block of flats in Southampton on Sunday after reports of a fire alarm sounding and smoke on an upper floor.

Emergency services were dispatched shortly before 12pm on 22 February to Shirley Towers in Milner Court, Southampton, following concerns about smoke in a corridor on the 13th floor.

On arrival, firefighters carried out a thorough investigation of the building. No fire was found and the sprinkler system had not been activated. There were no reports of any injuries.

Several fire crews attended the scene as a precaution. It is standard practice for additional resources to be mobilised to high-rise buildings to ensure sufficient support is available should it be required.

The alarm is believed to have been triggered by contaminants from smoking materials inside one of the flats. The smoke reported in the corridor was later traced to a faulty light fitting.

After the incident was resolved, responsibility for the building was handed over to Southampton County Council.
