Dispersal Order Issued in Portswood Ahead of Protest Activity

A dispersal order will be in place in Portswood this evening (Friday, 28 November) and again on Sunday (30 November) as police step up their response to protest activity on Highfield Lane.

The order, authorised by the local policing team, allows officers to direct anyone acting in an anti-social or unlawful manner to leave the area. It forms part of an ongoing operation around recent demonstrations in the Highfield Lane area.

Police say the powers have already been used on the past two Fridays, with one individual ordered to leave last week after reportedly behaving in an intimidating manner towards another member of the public.

Tonight’s order will run from 4pm to 9pm, while on Sunday it will operate between 2pm and 9pm. The designated area includes Highfield Lane, Shaftesbury Avenue, Portswood High Street, and extends down to Thomas Lewis Way.

Officers stressed that while they support the public’s right to free speech and lawful protest, they will not hesitate to take action against anyone causing disorder.

A spokesperson said public safety remains the priority during gatherings, adding that police continue to work closely with protest organisers, local residents, and partner agencies to minimise disruption and ensure events remain peaceful.
