City Centre Drug Operation Leads to Multiple Seizures and Arrests in Southampton

A coordinated police operation targeting drug-related activity across Southampton’s night-time economy led to multiple seizures, arrests and the detention of two prolific shoplifters over the weekend.

On Saturday night, officers from the Bargate and City Centre Unit joined forces with the Joint Operations Unit Dog Section to carry out a proactive deployment across key nightlife locations, including Oxford Street, the High Street and Bedford Place. The policing teams used a combination of plain-clothes officers mingling with crowds and high-visibility patrols to deter offending and identify suspicious behaviour.

According to police, drug detection dogs played a central role in the night’s activity, alerting officers to numerous individuals who were subsequently stopped and searched. Several people reportedly attempted to flee upon noticing the dogs, prompting further enquiries.

Across the evening, officers conducted dozens of stop and searches, resulting in the seizure of ketamine, cocaine and cannabis. Around 10 people were found to be in possession of illegal substances, with offences dealt with through out-of-court disposals, arranged interviews or follow-up action that may lead to formal cautions or court appearances.

Police also intervened in cases of predatory behaviour and anti-social incidents, supporting response teams dealing with alcohol- and drug-related calls.

In a significant development during the operation, officers located and arrested two prolific shoplifters wanted for multiple offences. The pair were held in custody throughout the weekend before appearing in court this morning (Monday 8 December).

A police dog named PD Major was credited by officers as having made a major contribution to the success of the operation.

Police thanked members of the public who engaged positively during the deployment, stating: “Together we are making Southampton a safer city.”
