Bitterne North Sees Surge in Vehicle Theft: Police Urge Vigilance

Residents in the Bitterne North area of Southampton — including Townhill Park, Bitterne Park, and Harefield — are being urged to secure their vehicles following a recent spike in thefts from cars, according to a police appeal issued today.

Hampshire Constabulary has reported a noticeable increase in incidents over the past few weeks, with many vehicles targeted after being left unlocked.

Police say CCTV footage and local reports have shown individuals walking down streets during the night, trying car door handles at random and, in some cases, even checking vehicles parked on private driveways. A range of items have been stolen, from small personal belongings to more valuable items.

“Even if your vehicle has been entered and nothing has been taken, or if there is no CCTV evidence, we would still like you to report this to us,” a police spokesperson said.
“Each report helps to build the picture of where these issues are happening and allows us to identify series of offences.”

Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and take basic but essential precautions, including always locking vehicles and removing or hiding any valuables inside.

In a warning to would-be thieves, officers also made a direct appeal:

“If you are one of the offenders that are having a huge impact on peoples lives — we are coming for you.”

The force has promised to step up patrols, particularly during the night hours, in a bid to catch offenders in the act and deter further criminal behaviour.

Officers also advised victims to check surrounding areas — such as bushes, bins, and alleyways — for stolen items that may have been stashed for later collection.

What to Do if You See Suspicious Activity:
• If you witness someone trying car door handles, particularly late at night, call 999 immediately.
• Try to provide a detailed description, including:
• Location
• Direction of travel
• What the individual is wearing

How to Report a Crime:
• Call 101 for non-emergency reporting
• Or visit the Hampshire Constabulary website to report online

The police emphasised that although this appeal is focused on the Bitterne North area, vehicle crime is a city-wide issue, and all residents are encouraged to take security precautions seriously.
