Work Begins on Major Redevelopment of Southampton’s Athletics Facilities

Work has officially begun on a major redevelopment of the athletics facilities at Southampton’s Outdoor Sports Centre, marking the start of a key phase in the city’s £36 million sports regeneration project.

Construction teams began work at the end of September, with the first phase including the installation of security fencing, demolition of the existing grandstand, and excavation for the new building foundations.

The upgrade will see the creation of a brand-new Athletics Pavilion, featuring a club room, registration and scoring room, first aid room and toilet facilities. A new grandstand will also be built, complete with storage areas for equipment. The first phase of works is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

This redevelopment is part of the wider regeneration of the Outdoor Sports Centre, which began in June 2025 and is scheduled for completion in early 2027. The ambitious project is being delivered through a combination of funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, the Football Foundation, Sport England, and Southampton City Council.

The improvements aim to transform Southampton’s main outdoor sports venue into a first-class facility that supports people to live healthy, active and independent lives.

Councillor Toqeer Kataria, Cabinet Member for Leisure and People at Southampton City Council, said the redevelopment would build on the city’s proud sporting heritage.

“Southampton Athletics Club has a rich history of developing athletic ability to the highest of levels and has been a training facility for medal-winning Olympians Kriss Akabusi, Roger Black and Todd Bennett.”

“The athletic improvements currently being delivered will ensure individuals of all ages and abilities have access to good quality facilities. The enhancements will help the Club to host events and compete nationally, as well as building on the Outdoor Sports Centre’s legacy of sporting excellence for future generations.”

Clifford Kinch, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction, the company leading the works, said the team is committed to delivering the project with minimal disruption.

“We’re proud to be delivering this transformative redevelopment for Southampton City Council, which will provide great facilities for athletes, clubs, and the wider community,” he said.

“The Outdoor Sports Centre has a proud sporting legacy, and these works will ensure it continues to inspire future generations with new and improved spaces. Our team is committed to working considerately to keep the site as safe and accessible as possible during construction, and we look forward to unveiling the next phase of works.”

While the works are underway, the athletics track will remain open, although some facilities may temporarily close as construction progresses.
