Woman charged with racially aggravated assault following shoplifting incident in Southampton

A woman has been charged with a number of offences following an assault linked to a shoplifting incident in Southampton.

Police were called just after 8pm on Wednesday 17 December after reports of shoplifting at the Co-op on Shirley Road. A security guard challenged the suspect in an attempt to recover the stolen items.

During the confrontation, the woman is alleged to have made racially abusive comments and thrown a glass bottle at the guard.

Officers later located and arrested a 40-year-old woman. Police said she became aggressive while being detained and spat at an officer as they attempted to handcuff her. After being taken to custody, she is further alleged to have spat at a detention officer.

Victoria Dawn Makey, of Millbrook Road, Southampton, has now been charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, racially aggravated common assault, common assault and theft.

She has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today (Friday 19 December).
