Weapons Sweep at Holyrood Estate Leads to Removal of Dangerous Items
A joint operation led by the Bargate Neighbourhood Policing Team, the Violent Crime Taskforce, and Southampton City Council has resulted in the removal of several dangerous items from Holyrood Estate, including a meat cleaver found near a children’s play area.
The weapons sweep, carried out earlier today, also uncovered multiple large nitrous oxide (NOS) canisters and other potentially hazardous objects in public spaces. All items were safely secured and removed by officers on scene.
Weapons sweeps are proactive searches conducted by police in public areas—such as parks, recreational grounds, and locations with hidden or concealed spaces—where dangerous items may be stashed or discarded. If any recovered items are suspected to be linked to criminal activity, further investigation is carried out.
The operation was supported by the Violent Crime Taskforce, a dedicated team focused on tackling serious violence and knife crime across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The taskforce works closely with local police teams to target crime hotspots, safeguard vulnerable individuals, and reduce harm through both enforcement and prevention initiatives.
Today’s sweep is an example of Hampshire Constabulary’s continued commitment to making Southampton a safer place. The discovery of a meat cleaver so close to a play area highlights the importance of this kind of work in protecting our communities.
