UPDATE: Two men released on bail as Ernest Deputat murder investigation continues

Two men arrested on suspicion of murdering Ernest Deputat have been released on bail as detectives continue their investigation.

A 30-year-old man was arrested in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and a 34-year-old man was arrested in Newham, London, on Monday, 16 February. Both were subsequently brought to Southampton, where they were questioned by officers.

Ernest’s body was discovered on Wednesday, 8 October, 2025, in woodland on Southampton Common by a member of the public. He was found close to the wildlife reserve just north of the Ornamental Lake.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, who is leading the investigation, said officers had made extensive use of the time the two men were held in custody.

He said: “Our team have made full use of the custody time available, including having an extension to their custody authorised, during which we have been carrying out interviews and seeking to gather more information in relation to Ernest’s tragic death.

“Arrests like these are an important part of us continuing to piece together details of Ernest’s life, allowing us to conduct a full and thorough investigation as we seek to find those responsible for his murder.

“The two men we arrested have now been released on bail, but this is with strict conditions in place.

“At this time, I still want to hear from anyone who may have information about Ernest’s death, or who could help us with more information about him and his life.

“His death has had a considerable impact on his family, and they deserve answers about what happened.”

The two men have been released on bail with strict conditions while enquiries continue.
