Southampton’s 37th Annual Toy Appeal Brings Festive Cheer to Children Across the City

The countdown to Christmas is officially on, and Southampton is once again rallying together to bring festive joy to hundreds of local children and young people through the city’s 37th Annual Toy Appeal.

Launching today (Friday 14 November) at Westquay Shopping Centre, the much-loved community initiative — organised by Southampton City Council — is calling on residents to donate new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children and young people aged birth to 18 years.

A council spokesperson said:

“What better way to spread some cheer than by giving a gift to a child in need? Every donation really does help to make a child or young person’s Christmas special.”

From its humble beginnings in 1988, the Toy Appeal has become a cherished city tradition. Each year, the campaign supports vulnerable children and young people who receive help from Southampton’s Children’s Services, as well as families facing severe financial hardship.

Donations can be dropped off at Westquay Level Three (next to Auntie Anne’s Pretzels) daily from 9am to 8pm, or at various collection points across the city, including:
• Civic Centre reception desk (Mon–Fri, 9.30am–5pm)
• Libraries in Central, Shirley, Lordshill, Thornhill, Bitterne, and Portswood (Mon–Sat, 10am–4pm)
• Tudor House and Garden, Southampton City Art Gallery, SeaCity Museum, MAST Mayflower Studios, The Marlands Shopping Centre, and Elite Garage (Northam Road)

All drop-off points will remain open until 4pm on Monday 22 December.

The council has highlighted an increased need for gifts for young people, especially boys aged 12–18. Suggested gifts include items such as headphones, rucksacks, clothing, sports equipment, wireless speakers, and gift vouchers for popular retailers including JD Sports, Sports Direct, New Look, and H&M. A full list of gift ideas can be found on the Southampton City Council website.

“On behalf of the children and young people who receive these new toys and gifts, we are so grateful for every donation,” the council added.

Local businesses are also encouraged to take part in the appeal. Those wishing to register their interest can complete a short online form via the Southampton City Council website.
