Southampton City Council Launches ‘Call for Sites’ to Help Shape City’s Future
Southampton City Council has launched a new public consultation inviting residents, landowners, developers, and community groups to help shape the future of the city. The initiative, known as a ‘Call for Sites’, is part of the development of the city’s next Local Plan — Southampton City Vision — which will guide how the city evolves through to 2042.
The council is seeking suggestions for land that could be suitable for a variety of future uses, including housing, employment, renewable energy, green spaces, and biodiversity projects. Importantly, participants do not need to own the land to put it forward — anyone with local knowledge is encouraged to contribute.
“We’re asking local people to give us the benefit of their knowledge to identify places that could be suitable for development in the next 15 or so years,” said a spokesperson for Southampton City Council. “This is an important part of the planning process and helps us to identify land that could be suitable for future development.”
The council is particularly interested in sites that could support:
• Housing – including market, affordable, and specialist homes
• Commercial and employment uses – such as offices, industrial units, retail and leisure
• Renewable energy generation – like solar or wind farms, including community-led schemes
• Public open spaces – such as sports pitches and parks
• Nature and biodiversity projects – including habitat mitigation land and rewilding initiatives
The suggested sites will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in the new Local Plan. If selected, they will be formally allocated for specific land uses, helping the council meet the long-term needs of the city’s growing population and economy.
To submit a site, participants are asked to use an interactive map on the council’s website and fill in a short form with details about the location, size, ownership, and potential use of the land.
The deadline for submissions is Sunday 30 November 2025.
More information and access to the submission form can be found on the Southampton City Council website.
