New CCTV Cameras to Be Installed Across Eastleigh Town Centre

Sixteen new state-of-the-art CCTV cameras are set to be installed across Eastleigh town centre and are expected to be fully operational by the end of March, following a £50,000 investment from Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones.

The new cameras will replace the town’s outdated CCTV system, which is no longer fit for purpose. The upgrade aims to deter crime and anti-social behaviour, support local businesses, and reassure residents and visitors.

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones said modern CCTV would play a vital role in improving public safety in the town centre.

“I have made it clear from the outset that having modern CCTV cameras in Eastleigh town centre will make the area significantly safer for businesses, visitors and residents,” she said.

“They’ll act as a strong deterrent against anti-social behaviour, shoplifting and crime as a whole.

“That’s why I offered Eastleigh Borough Council this funding.

“My top priority is people’s safety. I want you to feel reassured that you will be safe while working, shopping or enjoying a night out.

“I’m pleased these cameras will soon be in action to help police get criminals off our streets.”

The locations of the cameras will be determined by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, while Eastleigh Borough Council will be responsible for running and maintaining the system. The council is planning to switch the cameras on by the end of March.

Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, Councillor Keith House, welcomed the funding and highlighted the importance of partnership working.

“The safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors is always a priority for the Borough Council,” he said.

“It’s good news that the Police and Crime Commissioner has delivered on funding for modern CCTV cameras which will be a real asset in the police’s lead role on community safety – something we are keen to continue supporting.”

Eastleigh District Commander, Chief Inspector Rachel Noble, said the new system would significantly enhance crime prevention and detection in the town centre.

“CCTV is absolutely crucial to preventing and detecting crime and I am delighted that by working together the OPCC, Town Council, Eastleigh Borough Council, police and other key stakeholders have been able to find a solution that not only maintains CCTV coverage in the town centre but significantly improves it,” she said.

“I am grateful to the PCC for funding the new cameras and for the ongoing partnerships that will continue to improve the service that CCTV provides.”

Ruth Davies from Eastleigh Town Council also welcomed the upgrade, pointing to the collaborative effort behind the project.

“The retention and upgrade of Eastleigh Town Centre’s CCTV system shows what is possible when people with shared skills, values, and vision work together,” she said.
