Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police Step Up Burglary Prevention Efforts Over Christmas
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has launched a renewed push to prevent, detect and solve burglaries in the run-up to Christmas, urging residents to take extra care as opportunistic thieves look to take advantage of the festive season.
The force says it will be highlighting investigations, arrests and charges where possible throughout December as part of its commitment to tackling burglary and keeping communities safe.
Alongside that, officers are encouraging the public to follow simple crime-prevention steps—both while out shopping and at home—to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
When heading out, police advise residents to double-check their home is secure, ensuring all windows and doors are locked with keys kept out of sight. Shoppers are also urged to park in secure or well-lit areas, keep vehicles locked, and avoid leaving gifts, purchases or valuables on display. Those buying high-value items, such as bicycles, are encouraged to consider security features, including whether the product comes with a robust ‘D’ lock.
At home, officers warn against placing presents in view of windows, which can attract thieves. They recommend registering valuable items for free at immobilise.com and being mindful of how packaging from expensive goods is disposed of, so as not to advertise new purchases.
Residents are also encouraged to make their homes appear occupied—especially as evenings draw in—by using timer switches for lights or radios and ensuring curtains are closed. Police add that security devices such as alarms, video doorbells and outdoor lighting should be checked to ensure they are working properly.
For those planning to spend time away during the holidays, the force suggests asking a trusted neighbour to keep watch over their property and making sure regular deliveries are paused to prevent parcels or milk being left on the doorstep.
