Dispersal Order in Place Ahead of Southampton vs Portsmouth Clash

A dispersal order will be in effect in Southampton on Sunday, 14 September, as part of a large-scale policing operation ahead of the highly anticipated football match between Southampton and Portsmouth.

Hampshire Constabulary has authorised a Section 34 dispersal order, which will run from 7am to 7pm tomorrow (14 September). The 12-hour order will cover a wide area including Southampton city centre, as well as parts of Woolston and Bitterne.

The decision comes in response to previous experiences policing fixtures between the two fierce rivals, where tensions have sometimes led to disorder.

The dispersal order gives officers the power to remove individuals from the designated area if their behaviour is likely to contribute to crime, disorder, or anti-social activity. Those ordered to leave cannot return within a specified period, and failure to comply is a criminal offence, which could result in arrest.

Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson, Gold Commander for the policing operation, said the order is just one part of a wider strategy to ensure public safety.

“We’re really looking forward to playing our part in helping to make this much-anticipated game a great sporting event for all those attending,” he said.
“We know most fans will want to enjoy the unique atmosphere this game brings without any trouble, and our policing operation is there to ensure that.

“This dispersal order is one of many tactics we have at our disposal to respond quickly and effectively to anyone who is intent on causing disruption and we hope it sends a clear message that we will be ready to take action to keep everyone safe.”

Officers will be patrolling the affected areas throughout the day, and fans, residents, and business owners are encouraged to approach them with any concerns.

The dispersal order is part of a broader commitment by the police to create a safe environment for both sets of fans and the wider Southampton community.
