Southampton to Benefit from £84 Million Government Fund to Tackle Homelessness
Southampton City Council is set to receive a share of a new £84 million Government fund aimed at helping local authorities across England tackle homelessness and rough sleeping.
The funding, announced by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), comes at a crucial time as winter approaches and temperatures begin to fall. The money will support services working to prevent homelessness and assist individuals sleeping rough in the city.
Councillor Andy Frampton, Cabinet Member for Housing at Southampton City Council, welcomed the announcement, describing it as “very welcome news” that would strengthen the city’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable residents.
“This additional investment is very welcome news and will help to strengthen the work that is already taking place in Southampton to prevent homelessness, support those at risk, and help people move away from rough sleeping,” said Cllr Frampton.
“Tackling homelessness remains one of the most pressing challenges we face as a city. This funding will allow us to continue building on our partnerships with charities, health services and community organisations to deliver lasting solutions and ensure that everyone has a safe place to call home.”
The council said it will work closely with the Government and local partners to ensure the funding is targeted effectively, prioritising projects that make the greatest impact for those in need.
The announcement coincides with World Homelessness Day, marked annually on 10 October, which encourages communities across the globe to reflect on the issue of homelessness both locally and internationally.
Residents who are concerned about someone sleeping rough in Southampton are urged to contact StreetLink, a service that connects people sleeping rough with local outreach and support services.
