Maintenance Work to Begin on Itchen Bridge from 11 August

Major maintenance work is set to begin on Southampton’s Itchen Bridge next Monday, 11 August, as part of a six-month improvement programme led by Southampton City Council.

The essential works will see upgrades to the bridge’s drainage system, repairs to expansion joints, restoration of waterproofing, and a full resurfacing of both the highway and pedestrian footpaths. The council says these upgrades are crucial to keep the bridge safe and in good condition for the long term.

In an effort to minimise disruption, a detailed access schedule has been announced. The bridge will be fully open to traffic during peak commuting hours, with more restricted access during off-peak periods:
• 6am to 9.30am – Fully open
• 9.30am to 3pm – Open with temporary traffic signals
• 3pm to 8pm – Fully open
• 8pm to 6am – Closed to all traffic

The council acknowledges the inconvenience the works may cause but stresses the importance of the maintenance for the structural health and future safety of the bridge.

Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and consider alternative routes.
