Fire Damages Wildlife Habitat in New Forest Amid Ongoing Dry Weather
Date: 29 June, 2025
A fire broke out near Beaulieu Heath car park in the New Forest on Saturday, damaging approximately one hectare of forestland rich in wildlife. Forestry England confirmed the incident in a statement issued today, warning visitors to remain vigilant as the region experiences a prolonged spell of warm and dry weather.
Thanks to a rapid response by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was quickly brought under control, preventing further spread. However, the blaze still caused notable damage to an ecologically sensitive area.
This serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fire can devastate natural landscapes, especially in these dry conditions.
In a separate incident, New Forest rangers issued a fixed penalty notice to a group found lighting a campfire on the Forest—an act strictly prohibited under current regulations.
“BBQs, campfires, and the use of any outdoor cooking equipment are banned in the New Forest and a fineable offence,” a Forestry England spokesperson said.
Forestry England is urging all visitors to adhere to fire safety rules and to report any signs of fire immediately. Anyone spotting a fire is advised to move to a place of safety and call 999. Where possible, individuals should provide the exact location using the What3Words app to assist emergency services in locating the fire quickly.
Authorities are reminding the public that the New Forest is a highly sensitive environment, home to a wide variety of wildlife and rare plant species, many of which are particularly vulnerable to fire.
Every visitor plays a role in protecting this special landscape. Please enjoy the Forest responsibly and help keep it safe for generations to come.
