Rare White Rhino Calf Born at Marwell on Mother’s Day
A rare white rhinoceros calf has been born at Marwell Zoological Wildlife Park in a heart-warming arrival that coincided with Mother’s Day celebrations.
Keepers at the Hampshire wildlife park confirmed that eight-year-old female Zahra gave birth at approximately 6.30am on Sunday morning. Both mother and calf are said to be doing well during these crucial early days following the birth.
Zahra, who joined the Marwell herd in 2021, welcomed the calf with the support of experienced animal care staff, who are closely monitoring the pair while ensuring they are given the calm environment needed to bond. Early signs are encouraging, with the newborn already observed suckling and remaining close to its mother.
The calf’s father, 12-year-old Jabari, has been part of the herd since arriving from Dublin in 2015. The successful birth forms part of a wider European conservation breeding programme designed to help safeguard the future of white rhinos, a species that faces ongoing threats in the wild.
Visitors can still access the Rhino House, although the zoo has asked guests to remain mindful and help maintain a quiet atmosphere while Zahra adjusts to motherhood.
Zoo officials say they will continue to share updates as the calf grows stronger, but for now the arrival is being celebrated as a hopeful milestone for conservation and for the Marwell community.
